Your thoughts and reviews of the movie Devdas.

From Wikipedia: Devdas (Hindi: देवदास) is a 2002 Hindi film based on the Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay novella Devdas. This is the third Bollywood (Hindi) version and the first colour film version of the story in Hindi. The film is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and stars Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, and Aishwarya Rai in the leading roles.

At the time of its release, Devdas was the most expensive Bollywood film ever produced, with a reported budget of Rs 50 crores. The film was released in six alternative language versions: English, French, German, Mandarin, Thai, and Punjabi.

Shahrukh Khan's performance as the rebellious alcoholic Devdas is often considered one of his best performances, and won him a Filmfare Award. The song Dola Re Dola became a hit with its unique dance duet between Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit.

The film won ten Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, and received a BAFTA nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. It was also India's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.

My review (also on my website)

Sanjay Leela Bhansali´s „Devdas“ was the first Bollywood movie I´ve seen and not only for that it holds a special place in my heart. I think it was a blessing that I didn´t have to compare it to anything, because it was a completely new and unexpected experience for me. I found the lavishing sets, perfect costumes, beautiful music and the whole tragic fairytale mood of the story absolutely captivating. It has to be noted that his movie is Bhansali´s version, and he knowingly chose to change some things in the original story, for which some people cannot forgive him. True, it is practically impossible that an aristocratic lady would meet a courtesan, no matter what her intentions were, but Bhansali wrapped the whole plot in such a way you cannot imagine the movie without it anymore. The story itself is heartbreaking and also interesting from psychological point of view, as not one of the characters is good or evil, they all have weaknesses and failings, and despite beautiful, poetic language they are always very human.

Shahrukh Khan may seem a bit uncomfortable as a gentleman from London, but is unbelievably good as guilt-stricken, self-pitying alcoholic. Aishwarya Rai is a picture of perfect beauty and proves, that when she wants, she can really act. And then there is of course Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi. It is interesting to note that hers is the only character which undergoes a serious development from mesmerizing entertainer to devoted worshipper of a man who will never return her feelings. Madhuri executed the part with immense gracefulness and awed everybody with her dancing skills all over again. No other actress would be able to dance in 17 kg heavy costume and look as if it weighted nothing! Her dialog delivery was incredibly seductive, playful or fragile – whatever was needed in the situation, her voice sounding like “liquid romance”. Although given much less space than two other heroes, she stole every second in which she appeared for herself.

As somebody else has pointed out: “It´s not realistic by any stretch of the imagination, but for me it was just as emotionally overpowering as it was visually stunning. It´s a beautiful fairytale.”
---------------------------------------------------

Best moment: Every single Madhuri appearance. Paro running to the dying Devdas. And I have to say also the scene when Paro meets Chandramukhi, even though it was so controversial.

Worst moment:
I found Devdas´ sister in law terribly irritating, not because she was a baddie, but because of her over-the-top performance and constant whining.

I found several interesting "gossipy" articles related to Devdas, mentioning Madhuri....

Shah Rukh, Madhuri out of Bhansali's Devdas?
15th May 2000

Bollywood is abuzz with rumours about superstars Shah Rukh and Madhuri being kicked out of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's forthcoming magnum opus, Devdas.
Madhuri Dixit (who was to play Chandramukhi in the film) has allegedly been dumped because Bhansali's distributors feel that she is no longer the sure-fire B-O draw she was. What is supposed to have clinched the argument against the diva was her insistence on claiming airfares to and from Los Angeles.

Sources close to Bhansali now say that Shah Rukh Khan has also been given the boot in favour of Salman Khan, the director's eternal favourite.
The one star about whom there have been no second thoughts whatsoever is Aishwarya Rai (who is to play Paro), who had picked up award after award for her role in Bhansali's last Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

Bhansali himself has refused to either confirm or deny whether Shah Rukh had really been replaced by Salman. In the absence of any firm comment by the filmmaker, the Bollywood grapevine continues to buzz.

Sanjay wants to give 'Devdas' authentic Bangla flavor
26th May 2000 13.50 IST

Yet another director is venturing to make the Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's classic into a film after Kundan Lal Saigal and Dilip Kumar reaching to pinnacles of glory for their roles in ''Devdas''.

After the success of ''Khamoshi'' and ''Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'', famed director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was in Calcutta recently to impart an authentic Bengali flavor to the film featuring Shah Rukh Khan as the modern day lover, Aishwarya Rai in the role of Parvati, and Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi, the prostitute.

Set against the backdrop of the new millennium, the story will be given a contemporary twist.

''I'd rather not talk about 'Devdas' now. 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' happened very quietly and the final product was satisfying. At present, I would like to concentrate on my research work. It would sound pompous if I talk about this film at every stage of its making, explains the young director''.

Apparently Madhuri was pregnant for two whole years

Madhuri on way to Ma-hood
25th Aug 2000 12.50 IST
By Tanuka Chakraverty

Folks it’s official! It has been finally announced that Madhuri Dixit Nene is on her way to be a mother.

After a lot of speculations, it was confirmed that Ms Nene will deliver in seven months from now.

The actress had just returned from a long holiday from the US where her husband lives. She had resumed shooting for films that she had signed and was in particular, looking forward to the shooting of Devdas.

It was Madhuri's long time wish to be seen as 'Chandramukhi' on screen. Now with the stork visiting her, it is doubtful whether she will be able to do a role that demands plenty of dancing. But giving up a mere role in a film for motherhood is too small a sacrifice. And we're sure Mads will agree with us on that.

The buzz this week is that the mesmerizing Madhuri Dixit is already two months pregnant. The news has thrilled the Dixits and the Nenes (her husband's family), but has left her producers shaken. Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who had earlier extracted a promise from Madhuri that she would not get pregnant before his film 'Devdas' was completed, has perhaps received the biggest shock.

Madhuri shatters admirer's dream — again!
Sep 09, 2000

Madhuri DixitDirector Sanjay Leela Bhansali's long-cherished dream, it seems, has once been shattered. And this time it maybe for good.

Ever since Bhansali launched his career as an independent director, he has been dying to work with Madhuri Dixit. First, he couldn't get the actress to say yes for his debut directorial venture, Khamoshi-The Musical. And though Manisha Koirala stepped in to do a great job, after the film was rejected by his next choice Kajol, Bhansali still maintains one of his greatest regrets in life is Madhuri not working in Khamoshi.

And when Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam happened, Bhansali made the rounds of Dixitville once again. It was a literal action replay of events — rejected by Madhuri and then rejected by Kajol, the role was scooped up to glory by Aishwarya Rai this time.

Post Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, of course, Bhansali's stakes are at an all-time high. So, no surprises that Madhuri did not think twice before giving the nod to Bhansali's new film, Devdas. The film was announced with fanfare — and why not, when you have Shah Rukh Khan playing Devdas, Madhuri Dixit playing Chandramukhi and Aishwarya Rai playing Paro (interestingly, the director had approached Kajol for this role, and the lady refused Bhansali for the third straight time!).

But to get back to Madhuri and Bhansali's dream, just when you thought the dream would turn real, some blabbering gab leaked a rumour around that our dear Mrs Nene will be expecting the stork's visit in a few months' time!

While Madhuri has not yet officially confirmed reports of her pregnancy, a shattered Bhansali, we heard, is holding talks on the sly with Sushmita Sen for the Chandramukhi role — just in case the li'l gossip about Mads turning mom is true.

Que sera sera, Bhansali, what will be, will be. You simply can't change the course of fate, can you? Not even with the power of your most fervent dream.

Devdas' gets another jolt 25th Feb 2001 19.48 IST
By ApunKaChoice Bureau

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one worried man these days.

Sanjay's pet project, Devdas after a series of interruptions resumed shooting and was progressing smoothly when problem again, this time in the form of Madhuri Dixit, stalled shooting for fifteen more days.

Apparently, Madhuri was not impressed with the dress ensembles designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla had readied for Mads. The apparels were predominantly, as typical of Abu-Sandeep, in white and off-white color. Madhuri felt that the light shades would not stand up to the screen like bright, vibrant colors and sent back the clothes for a rework.

Madhuri is also believed to have given an ultimatum to Bhansali to finish the schedule as soon as possible so that she can go and join her husband in the US.

Plagued by problems perennially, Sanjay sits quietly on the gigantic sets of Devdas portraying 18th century Calcutta, looking a perfect 'Devdas' himself.

Her sis the only character which actually develops. From the stunning courtesan who sells herself into a devoted woman desiring nothing but love.... I did not read the book, because it is impossible to get it here, but I would love to, just to get more clear image of the character of Chandramukhi. She is among my top favourite fictional characters ever.

 Devdas is the Indian entry, Out of Competition, at the 55th Cannes Film Festival May, 15-22 2002.

 At Rs 50 crore, Devdas is the most expensive Hindi film ever. For an industry in financial crisis, it's a huge risk. As for the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the three stars—Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai—the film will have a major impact on the way their careers progress.

 Rs 20 crore were spent on six sets only.

 700 lightmen worked with the help of 42 generators to supply 30 lakh watts of power.

 1.22 lakh pieces of stained glass were used to make Paro's room.

 Chandramukhi's kotha alone cost Rs 12 crore.

 Multi-Dimensional set inspired by Dilwara Temples in Rajasthan have been used.

 Chandramukhi's kotha was built on the banks of an artificial lake.

Every Madhuri's Costume Cost around 15 Lakhs and Aishwarya's one 10-12 Lakhs.

'Maar Dala' is picturised on Madhuri and is shown in the promos for a few seconds. Kavita Subramaniam and K.K lend their voices for this track. There is ample scope for Madhuri to show her dancing skills in the track as it is infused with classical beats and thumkas. The song is not very upbeat but slow and takes time to grow on you. K.K does some crooning towards the end and reminds you of 'Tadap tadap' from 'Hum dil ..'. The song is in the leagues of those Pakeezah numbers, perhaps inspired from the timeless classic 'Inhi logon ne' picturised on Meena Kumari. A good song that will look better on screen for sure, thanks to Madhuri.
Lyrics like 'Bairi piya bada bedardi..' would have seemed impossible in today's age of remix,' pappu pager' and 'aati kya khandala..'. However, the lyricists Nusrat Badr and Sameer have given some really beautiful words for the songs that take us back to those golden days of the late 70's. The song 'Bairi Piya' is sung by Udit Narayan and Shreya Ghosal and is a romantic number, which starts off on a chorus and the sound of a violin, is basically a playful and teasing number between the lovers. Shreya Ghosal sounds brilliant, and totally overshadows Udit Narayan in this number. The melody seems like the old school types but is still haunting and pleasurable to the ears.
'Kahe Ched Mohe' is a classical dance number composed and sung by Pt Birju Maharaj, Kavita Subramanian and hold your breath, Madhuri Dixit herself! It seems to be the much talked about number where there is some jugalbandi between Paro and Chandramukhi. Those who are all ears for hardcore classical music will be thrilled to hear this song. Madhuri speaks out some words that seem to be a part of the dance number, and she sounds as sweet as she looks on screen. Kavita has the main singing to do, and she handles this difficult song with admirable courage and enthusiasm. No one but her could have done justice to this number. This song, which is a treat to listen, is definitely going to be a bigger treat to see!
'Chalak Chalak' is a song about boozing and drinking, which is the basic theme of Devdas, no kidding! Udit Narayan, Vinod Rathod and Shreya Ghosal join in the party to create a musical ruckus in this joyously intoxicating number. Onscreen one can actually visualize Shahrukh with the 'madira' dancing and having a blast. The song has a very A.R Rehmanish feel to it, on the lines of 'Ghanana ghanana ' from Lagaan with words like 'dhammak dhaamak, chaanan chaanan, and chalak chalak'. It is a song about sounds, booze and more booze, maybe one needs to get intoxicated to enjoy it all the more. Try it if you can!
'Devdas - The Theme' begins with birds chirping and some soft music, but soon moves on to some heavy bass beats and a serious tragic tone. Rashmi Sharma & Supriya Raghav Chatterjee took the credit for singing and humming on the track. The track, which is composed by Monty, can be used as a trailer of what the film is going to be like, something serious, tragic yet full of love, passion and joy. There is the sound of whips, a child like yelling voice, and distress all over the theme. It succeeds in sending out the right signals to the people about the theme of the movie.

• The set of Chandramukhi's kotha was constructed around a lake. Consequently, the water in the lake kept drying up and gallons of water had to be regularly filled in. Moreover, the bridge built across the lake had a tendency to sink at all the wrong times.
• Devdas is one of the three films in India that have won the most awards at Filmfare Awards, the other two are Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Black with the most wins.
• Madhuri Dixit was pregnant when shooting began.
• Saif Ali Khan and Govinda were both offered the role of Chunnibabu.
• The role of Devdas was first offered to Salman Khan but he declined.
• Sanjay Leela Bhansali initially considered Kareena Kapoor for role of Chandramukhi, but he later realized she was too young and amateur to play the role of a courtesan.
• The sequence where Paro's mother, Sumitra, is made to dance at a social gathering was inspired from a recurring nightmare of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's - his mother's utter humiliation.
• Devdas was the first recent Bollywood film to receive an invitation to Cannes.
• Devdas was India's entry in the foreign film category for the 2003 Academy Awards
• Ismail Darbar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali spent two and a half years composing the music for the Devdas soundtrack. Each song, being complexly structured, had to be mixed 8-9 times and the recording took ten days.

• Normally, two or three generators would have been used for a film, but this production used 42. This disrupted the outdoor marriages in Bombay as all the generators were being used for the sets. The film also used 2,500 lights, 700 lighting men and a large number of junior artistes. By the time Zamindar Bhuvan's haveli had to be designed, Bhansali's budget was eaten up.
• Paro's delicate stained-glass house was erected from November to June - safe, non-monsoon months, Bhansali assumed. During those months, there were four unprecedented rain showers, which caused the colors in the stained glass to run, and they had to be retouched regularly. Moreover, dollys were rolled over the floors of the house, which led to a lot of chipping.

Her portrayal of chandramukhi is just out of this world. She had such a multi faceted character and she played it soo well and most likely she was the one that brought it so much dimension and versatility. She's like madhubala but better.
