Jhoom Barabar Jhoom: Chum Barabar Chum

indya.com rating: 2.5 out of 5 *

Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Bobby Deol and Lara Dutta
Director: Shaad Ali

Synopsis: Two strangers, Rikki (AB Jr.) and Alvira (Preity) bump into each other at a railway station in London. Waiting for a train to arrive from Birmingham, they both start talking. When the girl with a stiff upper lip, Alvira senses Rikki is trying to flirt with her, she makes it clear that she is already engaged to Steve (Bobby) and is waiting for him to arrive. A con by profession, Rikki tells her that his fiancée Anaida (Lara) is also on the same train. To pass time till the delayed train arrives, the Pakistani, Alvira and Punjab da Puttar, Rikki then talk about how they met their respective partners. The train arrives and both part ways exchanging numbers.

But in reality, those arriving on the train are Alvira's aunt and cousin and Rikki's partner in crime, Huffy bhai (Piyush Mishra) and his clients. Rikki and Alvira who hid the truth about their love lives now end up falling in love with each other despite being poles apart. When they speak for the first time on phone after their meeting, in nervousness they blabber out that their respective partner's are interested in meeting them that evening. A big problem now in front of them is that in real the partner's they spoke are just figments of their imagination. How they then try to save the day and what the evening leads to forms the remainder of the film.

Acting: Abhishek's vibrancy and enthusiasm is contagious. You immediately fall in love with his loud desi character from the time he mouths his first line - 'I got class'. Despite less screen time than Preity, Lara scores over her with her stylized French act in the first half and the no holds barred bindaas babe act in the second. Preity looks a little jaded in the film. She carries on the same confused ex-pression seen in her last few films. Despite a badly etched character, Bobby is good especially in the second half. Big B is an item boy appearing only whenever the title track plays in the film. Piyush Mishra amuses with his great one-liners.

indya.com rating: 3 out of 5

Direction: Shaad (Saathiya, Bunty Aur Babli) fails to maintain a consistent tempo. He is good in parts and at times totally listless. Some of the scenes he handled well are - Abhi's hotel scenes in Paris, Abhi-Preity first meeting at the coffee table and the climax when Abhi rushes to Preity's neighbour's house.

indya.com rating: 2 out of 5

Script: The biggest drawback of the film is Habib Faisal's (Ta Ra Rum Pum) script. It just doesn't work. The first half appears to go nowhere and when the cards are opened just post interval, you know the predictable route the film is going to take. Abhishek saves the last 15 minutes of the film which are fun only because of his performance. The dance competition, though entertaining, just goes on and on endlessly. With four long smooches exchanged in the film, you feel the apt title could have been Choom Barabar Choom.

indya.com rating: 2 out of 5

Music: Shankar- Ehsaan- Loy's paisa vasool music holds this shallow film together. The film begins and ends with the Big B picturised title track. Its rustic Punjabi version shot at a dancing competition between the two couples makes you feel like dancing in the aisles. Ticket To Hollywood is fun to watch for AB Jr.'s expressions. The soft duet, Bol Na Halke Halke with its meaningful lyrics by Gulzar and melodious tune immediately finds a place in your heart.
