Mature and marvellous: Madhuri Dixit is silencing the cynics who feel there's no place for older actresses in B-Town

Madhuri Dixit has surely silenced cynics who thought Indian showbiz has no place for mature, married women with children.

The 46-year old diva, who ruled the silver screen in the eighties, is all around us spreading her radiant smile.

She has broken the jinx associated with married women in Bollywood, articulately building Brand Madhuri having signed new leading roles, endorsement deals and a successful television stint.

The buzz on her signing a multi-crore contract recently to be the brand ambassador of a prominent tea label has been doing the rounds.

The deal seals her place in the world of endorsement, which is largely ruled by younger faces from Bollywood, the modelling world and sports.

She has launched products like Oral B, Olay, Taj Mahal Tea, Xpert dish wash and among others.

"After all these years her beauty is ageless. She stands the test of time and thus creates authenticity and familiarity for brands. She has eternity written all over her!" says Josy Paul, chief creative culprit and chairman, BBDO India.

"The advertisement industry has had a slot for slightly older actresses with grace and mature looks to be presented as the face of certain niche products. Madhuri has smartly handled her career only to emerge as the new face of endorsements," says ad filmmaker Prahlad Kakkar.

With the popularity of her peppy item dance Ghaghra with Ranbir Kapoor in the year's biggest blockbuster so far, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Madhuri announced her presence in a big way.

In 2011, when Madhuri decided to shift to India from Denver, reports suggested that she wanted to set up a dance academy in Mumbai while Dr Nene had plans to open a multi-specialty hospital.

The buzz is bureaucratic hassles have slowed down the plans.

Instead of settling for roles of mother or bhabhi that are usually offered to 45-plus married actresses wanting to make a comeback, Madhuri waited for films based on strong women-oriented subjects.

She reportedly turned down Anil Kapoor's offer to play mommy to Sonam Kapoor in the desi remake of Mark Water's film Freaky Friday.

Instead, she took the small screen route to create an impact.

She appeared as judge on the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4.

Madhuri's charisma worked and the fourth season got a record-breaking response with the TRPs touching 5.6.

Her Bollywood career is on the track too.

She will soon be seen in the Anubhav Sinhaproduced Gulab Gang and Abhishek Choubey's Dedh Ishqiya, a sequel to the Vidya Balan-starrer Ishqiya.

"Bollywood is a tough place, tougher for actresses and toughest for married actresses who want to make a comeback. The industry is still not charitable to give back a returning diva her old place at the top," says choreographer Saroj Khan.
