On Friday Bollywood’s dancing diva Madhuri Dixit tweeted “We have a huge surprise in store for all you dancers and budding dancers! Watch for news on Monday”

While many speculated that it it could be the announcement of a new season of a dance reality show she has judged before. Putting a full stop to all the rumors, Madhuri launched her own online dance academy for all her fans. She tweeted “World wide launch of my dance academy!!!! http://www.dancewithmadhuri.com, http://www.madhuridixit-nene.com Come dance with me!!!!”
“I have had a passion for dance since the age of 3. I want to share it with you and bring everyone together in a social way through dancing. No matter who you are, you can learn to dance at your own pace, in your own setting, and socialize with people around the planet. dancewithmadhuri.com is an online dance academy which is accessible anywhere, anytime on any device!” she added.

For now, she is heading to Lucknow to shoot for Vishal Bhardwaj’s “Dedh Ishqiya” with Arshad Warsi and Naseeruddin shah. There are also rumors that Madhuri is likely to feature in a fiction TV show. However, there is no confirmation on that front.

The Exclusive Madhuri Dixit Interview

Over the last few months, Madhuri Dixit has successfully managed to build an online profile to connect with fans through apps, social media and all digital engagement tools that many of her Bollywood peers still find difficult to crack. Madhuri's latest project Dance With Madhuri is a website where fans can get dancing lessons in the form of interactive, video packages split over multiple clips. We caught up with her to find out more about the website as well as understand her smooth transition from being an old-school-superstar to a new-age-tech-savvy celebrity.

You belong to a different generation of Bollywood stars, yet you are so comfortable with modern tools like social media and the Internet. How have you managed to transition so easily and perhaps be even more active that the younger lot, in terms of your online presence.

Age is no barrier. It is just your mind and how you want to expand it. Bachchan Saab is so good on Twitter and such things. He writes a blog also. I am still not that comfortable with blogging, but facebook and twitter are fine. My husband has also contributed in this, as he is very tech savvy. I am learning a lot from him.

Look at the world. I think all the screens, be it digital or TV are going to be one. Already in the movies, we no longer get those big-reels. Today it is all done digitally. So with 3D and 4G that is clearly the future.

How did the concept of this website strike you?

We have our own media and content company called 'RnM Moving Pictures'. My husband and I wanted to make our start with the digital space. My husband had his own software company before he did medicine, so he has experience in writing software. I am a very passionate dancer. I wanted to take this art form to every house as I feel everybody should be able to dance.

Considering the love fans have given me all these years, I felt this is a way of giving something back to them. Lot of fans have been writing to me that they wish they could learn dancing from me. In the past I have toyed with the idea of a dance academy, but I did not want to limit myself to say just 200 people. So my husband partnered with a company and together they came up with this idea.

What can fans of your dancing expect from this Madhuri Dixit venture?

What I like most is that there is a lot of fun to be had with dancing. So people can upload their own dance videos, share, comment, connect…There is also interactivity such as stamina, hearts, badges, rewards and all those things. A panel of choreographers will also judge the videos and the winner could then get a chance to meet me. At one level it is also a nice way to discover new talent. Suppose there is an Indian sitting in China who is a very good dancer, this could be a way for that person be discovered.

So is talent management the next logical step?

I have not thought that far into the future. Right now it is just about discovery. So Ram takes care of technology and I take care of the artistic side of it.

How did you select Ek Do Teen and Mai Ni Mai as your launch numbers?

Mai Ni Mai is a very simple dance. Anybody can do it. Plus it is a very popular shaadi song. Ek Do Teen of course because it is a life changing song for me. It is slightly difficult, but if people keep going over the videos again and again, they can learn it.

How do these lessons work?

Each song is split into several video lessons. Later we will have more songs based on reactions.

If a group of friends are planning a sangeet, there can all learn the same song in different parts of the world and come together to do the same dance. Some people are shy about dancing in front of others, so they can practice it in privacy, in their own rooms on their smart-phones or ipads.

Is this essentially aimed at the NRI market?

There are fans all over the world, except for maybe a small part of Iceland (jokes). Bollywood is global and there is interest from all over. Even Dancing With The Stars had a Bollywood theme. So everybody is curious about learning, but don't know how to go about it. I just wanted to create an umbrella where I can showcase all forms of dance. And it’s not just my Bollywood songs, there will be other numbers too as well as classical forms like Kathak. Also folk, jazz, western…We will have professionals teaching a variety of styles. It’s not necessary that I teach every song.(Madhuri says that if fans want to practise a non-Madhuri number like Radha, they will teach that also).

And what about the guys? Nothing for them?

Absolutely there will be stuff for guys too, and for people from all ages.

Will you invite any of your co-stars to do guest lessons?

If they would like to come, I would love to have them. But as of now the plan is to focus on choreographers as the platform is to teach and learn dance. Not just watching.

How do you plan to take this further?

Sky is the limit. At some point we may charge, but it will be affordable, as I want dancewithmadhuri.com to reach out to as many people as possible. And whatever money we earn, a part of it will go back into the project, while the rest will go to charity.

What advice do you have for stars who still have a phobia towards connecting with fans digitally?

It is the future, don’t be scared of it. I am not saying I am very good at it, but I am learning. My kids are fearless with technology so I am learning a lot from them.

Finally what do you think is the secret behind your ability to appeal to fans across generations?

My dancing has helped me connect with people from all over the world. I just love dancing. And maybe it is my passion that connects with them.

Dance with Madhuri Dixit

If anyone was to ask me who my favorite Hindi film star is, I’d have to say it’s Madhuri Dixit. Something about her smile, her grace, the way she can act so very young and childish in one film, and then strong and empowered in the next, but most of all, I really feel she is the most talented dancer Bollywood has ever seen. When she retired from Hindi films, I totally felt the void, but at the same time I was so happy that she got married and had started a family – that too in the USA! She really has such a great head on her shoulders. Sigh….I heart her.

I thought we’d seen the last of her in 2002 with Devdas and Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, but in 2007 she came back with Aaja Nachle and rekindled that dance flame for her fans who had missed her presence all these years. I remember the first time I watched it, I rewound the dance sequences over and over again until I had the dance moves memorized.

I used to do that exact same thing with her other dance songs when I was younger – Channe Ke Kheth Main, Palki Pe Hoke, Aaja Sajan Aaja, Mai Ni Mai, and of course all of her dance numbers from Devdas. Deep down, I have a soft spot for her because she’s trained professionally as a Kathak dancer – something I grew up doing too when all my friends around me where Bharatnatyam devotees. Sadly, the Aaja Nachle flame was doused once more and we fans were left in the dark.

Now, it’s 2013, and in true Madhuri fashion, she’s come back with the most innovative idea I’ve seen come from any Hindi film star. She’s started a dance academy online, so you can learn her dance moves step by step to classic dance routines from her films. Genius.

If you are a fan of Bollywood dancing, this site is for you! Not only will you get to watch short videos of her showing you how to do a few steps at a time, but you get to hear her sweet voice teach you in her classic mix of Hinglish.

When you log on to her website you understand that this is a pretty simplistic idea, done in a highly intellectual and very conscientious manner.

This is my way of getting closer to my fans.” Madhuri said when she launched the site. “We want it to become such a dance academy where every dance style can be learned under one roof, whether it is Indian, folk, classical, or Western. Dance has always been my passion.”

In her opening remarks on the site, she explains how she feels dance is a language that knows no boundaries. There is a short tutorial that guides you on how to use the website – including Twitter and Facebook connections so you can log on through your Facebook account or Tweet your experience with her site. Then you see the thumbnails you’ve been waiting for. Madhuri dressed in a gorgeous flowy churidaar suit, ready to teach you her first dance, Mai Ni Mai from Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Each short video, when completely viewed, unlocks the next video. Each video is under 2 minutes (that’s I’ve seen so far) giving you the opportunity to review it and learn only 4-5 steps at a time. Every time you complete a video, a cute message pops up that positively reinforces your accomplishment and allows you to post your progress on Facebook if you’ve logged in through it. But that’s not all.

The most amazing part of this whole experience is that once you feel you’ve mastered the dance, you can upload a video of yourself performing the dance (or even just a part of the dance) and Madhuri Dixit and the dance teachers of her academy will review them and give you feedback! There’s even a leader board for pupils who are showing the best progress and have mastered the moves. You can earn badges and points and real dance status! Amazing! What a way to make it fun and interactive.

I’m sold. She currently has two songs up, but she only unlocks one video (i.e. one part of a song) at a time until that whole song is complete. I imagine once you’ve completed a full song, another song is up for unlocking. So far she has Mai Ni Mai from Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Ek, Do, Teen from Tezaab. I can only pray that she will release one of her Devdas dance numbers!

If you want to join her dance academy, log on to www.dancewithmadhuri.com and start the fun. Put the kids to bed, and find some ‘me time’ with Madhuri. That’s my plan! Then, once I have the moves down – I can teach my daughter during our playtime.

I’m so glad she’s back and reaching out in such a savvy way to her fans. Hats off to my fav superstar – In no time, you can say that you’ve got the moves like Jag…I mean Madhuri!

Are you planning to dance with Madhuri Dixit? What’s your all time favourite song by the dancing diva? Leave a comment and let us know!
