Actress Madhuri Dixit's husband Dr Shriram Nene will do what all good doctors do in Bollywood movies - reject big money to serve the poor.

Dr Nene, who gave up his lucrative practice in Denver to return to India with Madhuri and their two sons last year, has rejected offers from at least three top Mumbai hospitals to take up an honorary post at BMC-run KEM hospital in Parel.

A cardiothoracic surgeon with special expertise in Mitral Valve repair surgery, Dr Nene met KEM dean Sanjay Oak on Saturday morning to offer his services. He spent four hours meeting doctors and patients at KEM's Cardio-Vascular Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) building and was, by all accounts, impressed by the work the hospital is doing in providing expensive, super-speciality treatment to poor patients.

He met at least five patients - both pre-surgery cases and those recuperating post-surgery. He also met a couple of children who had undergone complicated surgeries.

The same evening, he wrote an email to Dr Oak and other doctors thanking them for showing him around the hospital and expressing his keenness to join them as soon as mutually possible.

Dr Nene had offers to head Harkisondas, Kokilaben or Hiranandani hospital. But two factors swung the deal in KEM's favour - one, he's isn't yet keen to settle down in a corporate role; and two, the exposure a municipal hospital offers in terms of variety and experience cannot be matched by a private hospital.

Confirming that Dr Nene met him and offered to take up an honorary post, Dr Oak on Tuesday said: "Yes he is interested in doing work at KEM hospital. It's a perfect match, but we will only decide once he is registered with the Maharashtra Medical Council."

Dr Nene has already applied for registration with the Maharashtra Medical Council and the paper work should not take more than a couple of weeks.

KEM, of course, would like to have Dr Nene on its duty rolls as soon as possible. As of today, KEM has a waiting list of 600 patients for various types of heart surgeries, and the minimum waiting period is six months. The hospital receives at least 30 new cases a month. Dr Nene, with his 15 years of experience, can lighten this load a little bit.

Dr Nene graduated from the Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri, one of the top ranking medical schools in the US. He was last employed at Rocky Mountain Cardiovascular in Denver, Colarado and was affiliated with 11 hospitals, including the Sky Ridge Medical Centre and the Swedish Medical Centre.

He, however, hasn't picked up a scalpel after returning to India in October last year.

Madhuri broke a million hearts when she married Dr Nene in 1999 and relocated to the United States. When she returned 2011, there was a lot speculation around how Dr Nene would keep himself occupied here. Then came reports of the keen interest he was taking in wife entertainment career, and it appeared the doctor could hang up his surgical coat for good.

Though the Nenes recently bought a large space in Maurya Landmark building in the suburbs to set up their production house, it's clear now that Dr Nene has more on mind than just movies and TV serials.

Mr Madhuri Dixit rejects top job to serve those in need

Mumbai: This one is not about actress Madhuri Dixit, but her husband Dr Sriram Nene. On Saturday morning, the patients of KEM hospital in Parel in Mumbai got a surprise visit by Dr Nene, who met with some of patients who had undergone heart surgeries.

Dr Nene, who shifted base to India in 2011 along with wife, actress Madhuri Dixit and their two sons, is soon going to take up the honorary post at the BMC-run KEM hospital. A cardiothoracic surgeon with special expertise in Mitral Valve repair surgery, Dr Nene was offered lucrative jobs by some of the leading ‘five star’ hospitals in the city. But Nene seems to have rejected high-flying jobs and has decided to work for a government hospital.

On Saturday, Dr Nene met KEM dean Sanjay Oak to discuss his joining date. According to a daily, he spent four hours meeting doctors and patients at KEM`s Cardio-Vascular Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) building and was impressed by the services that the hospital offers to those who cannot afford an expensive medical treatment.

Dr Nene had offers to head premiere medical institutions like Harkisondas, Kokilaben and Hiranandani hospital. But Dr Nene wasn’t keen on doing a corporate job and was more interested to use his skills in a municipal hospital as the cases that come there are lot more varied.

Speaking to the daily, Dr Oak confirmed that Dr Nene had indeed met him and had decided to accept the honorary post. "Yes he is interested in doing work at KEM hospital. It`s a perfect match, but we will only decide once he is registered with the Maharashtra Medical Council," said Dr Oak.

Dr Nene, who has already applied for registration with the Maharashtra Medical Council, is expecting to get a nod from the council in a few weeks.

Madhuri’s husband graduated from one of the top medical schools of US- the Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri and was practicing at Rocky Mountain Cardiovascular in Denver, Colarado before the couple decided to shift to India.

While Madhuri has decided to make a comeback in films, the couple has also apparently bought space in Mumbai to set up their own production house. Whether or not he takes interest in films or television is something we will have to wait and watch but for now Dr Nene gets a big thumbs up from us for rejecting big offers to serve those who are in need of good medical treatment.

Madhuri Dixit's hubby Dr Nene allowed to practise in Maharashtra

Actor Madhuri Dixit-Nene’s husband Dr Shriram Nene has finally got permission to practise medicine in Maharashtra. Dr Nene, a cardio-thoracic surgeon, recently registered himself with the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), which is mandatory to practise in the state.

The actor shifted to India with her family almost a year ago. Since then Nene has shown his keenness to practise in Mumbai. He was a practising physician in Colorado in the US before relocating to India. On, October 21 last year, DNA had first reported about Dr Nene’s desire to practise in Mumbai.

According to sources, two top hospitals in Bandra and Andheri are vying to rope in Nene in their panel. However, before getting MMC’s permission, Nene visited KEM hospital and expressed his desire to work there. Dr Sanjay Oak, former dean of KEM hospital, said, “Dr Nene met me at KEM hospital and expressed his wish to join us. But he didn’thave registration from MMC.”

MMC president Dr Kishor Taori said, “Before our council registration Dr Nene got permission from Medical Council of India to practise in the country. After that he applied to our council because he wanted to practise in Maharashtra. He has been given the state council registration and now he can practise here.”

“Every doctor who practises modern medicine in the state has to register himself with the MMC. After he submits an application and his degree-related documents, they are checked by our committee; only then is a doctor allowed to practise in the state.”
