Madhuri-Juhi together in Gulab Gang

In a casting coup of sorts, two heroines, Madhuri Dixit Nene and Juhi Chawla, who were pitted against one another for the top rank through the late 80s and 90s; but who haven't been seen together sharing screen space, are coming together for the first time in Anubhav Sinha's 'Gulab Gang'.

The film needed two strong performers. Anubhav, who had finalised Madhuri earlier, was looking for his second leading lady for a while now. It was just a few days ago that Juhi agreed to be a part of the project.

Says Anubhav, "Gulab Gang is about two iconic female characters. I couldn't have pulled off a better cast than the two most iconic female stars, Madhuri and Juhi, together for the first time on Indian screen. My film is an action and drama piece with two women at loggerheads. I needed actors who would justifiably match up to each other, both in terms of their performance and stature. I think, this is the best the film could get, because the subject material is so strong."

Juhi, who is riding high because of the numerous compliments she has received for her fantastic performance in Son of Sardaar is said to be kicked about the fact that she is getting into another very exciting film with Madhuri.

What is Gulabi Gang
Gulabi Gang is a women's group from Uttar Pradesh's Bundelkhand region that takes up the cause of women facing violence, domestic and social problems. The leader of the gang is Bigg Boss contestant Sampat Pal. Pal was eliminated a couple of weeks back from the reality show. Though there have been talks about the film being based on Pal's life, the director has denied it.

‘Gulab Gang’ makes history with Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla on board

Mumbai: Anubhav Sinha has managed a casting coup of sorts. In his forthcoming film ‘Gulab Gang’ the director has succeeded in bringing yesteryears` rivals, Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla on board together for the first time.

Now those who aren’t aware, Madhuri and Juhi were considered as competitors back in the late 80s and 90s. The two actresses were pitted against each other for the number one spot and never did any film together.

While Madhuri was signed long back, Juhi’s inclusion into the project is recent.

Confirming the news to a daily, Anubhav Sinha explained, " ‘Gulab Gang’ is about two iconic female characters. I couldn`t have pulled off a better cast than the two most iconic female stars, Madhuri and Juhi, together for the first time on Indian screen. My film is an action and drama piece with two women at loggerheads. I needed actors who would justifiably match up to each other, both in terms of their performance and stature. I think, this is the best the film could get, because the subject material is so strong."

Madhuri, who was last seen in ‘Aaja Nachle’ in 2007, will appear on silver after a long hiatus, while Juhi was last seen in a hilarious performance in ‘Son Of Sardar’ that released this Diwali. Reportedly, Juhi is very excited at the prospect of working with Madhuri.

The film which is based on true incident and a gang called ‘Gulabi Gang’ and the film also stars Mahie Gill and Shilpa Shukla. ‘Gulabi Gang’ is a women`s group from Uttar Pradesh`s Bundelkhand region that takes up the cause of women facing violence, domestic and social problems. The group’s leader Sampat Pal was recently seen in ‘Bigg Boss’.

With such a powerful subject and firebrand actresses on board, this one is bound to be a crackling film.

Aamir, Salman and SRK, please take a cue from these two divas.

Madhuri Dixit avoids traffic snarls, opts for jetty ride!

After her last film 'Aaja Nachle' in 2007, Madhuri Dixit Nene will be back on silver screen with Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Gulaab Gang’. The actress is working hard for the film as it is based on the women’s movement 'Gulabi Gang' started by Sampat Pal. The latest news that we bring to you from the film is that Madhuri will be travelling in a Jetty. Yes! You read it right the Dhak Dhak girl has decided to avoid the Mumbai traffic and take the sea route to reach sets.

As per a source on the sets, “Madhuri has started shooting today. We are shooting in Mud Island and it is pretty far from the suburbs. So, to avoid traffic Madhuri has decided to take the sea route and use a jetty to reach the sets. This will help her to reach sets in less then half an hour whereas travelling by road would easily take about 2 hours.”

The source adds, “The call time for the shoot is 8 am. This jetty ride will save time for the actress. A special jetty is booked for her to-and-fro journey.”

Well, we should say Mrs. Nene certainly knows how to manage time.

Check out Juhi-Madhuri shooting for Gulab Gang

On the sets of Anubhav Sinha's Gulab Gang, former rivals Madhuri and Juhi bond over no-smoking rules and motherhood

Raju Shelar (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 12, 2012)

Madhuri Dixit's much anticipated comeback venture has finally started rolling. After Dedh Ishqiya reportedly failed to work out and Sanjay Dutt's remake of Satte Pe Satta got stuck due to unknown reasons, the actress, who was last seen on the big screen in YRF's Aaja Nachle, decided to make a sociopolitical impact by heading the cast of Anubhav Sinha's production Gulab Gang based on Sampat Pal's group of women activists in Uttar Pradesh. Mirror cameraman caught Mads on the very first day of the shoot.
Early on Tuesday morning, around 6.30 am, Mads stepped out of her car outside the shoot location in Madh Island. Juhi Chawla, who plays the parallel female lead in the film joined Mads soon after. Director Soumik Sen and his crew were already there.

Interestingly the two actresses, who were reportedly the closest competitors in the 90s, hit it off immediately. And it was partly because the film's unit had come up with a cunning plan to keep people from smoking on sets. Each time someone was caught smoking he or she had to pay a fine of Rs. 500. And the two ladies had a good time spotting the smokers and collecting the loot.
"The crew was initially a little apprehensive since Juhi and Madhuri were never the best of friends and quite cold to each other in their heydays. Also, the film has Madhuri in an authorbacked role of an activist. Juhi has a relatively smaller role as politician. But the minute they faced the camera for the first shot, the crew could sense their mutual comfort. They are no longer the fiercely competitive screen queens they used to be 15 years ago," a source from the sets told us.

Apparently, the two actresses kept discussing motherhood and kids between shots. "It was quite funny because neither Madhuri nor Juhi is known to be particularly sociable on the sets. But together these two reserved ladies opened up with one another and had a blast," added the source.

The shoot that went on till evening, saw Mads wear a pink (Gulabi) saree and dress up in a rustic way. Juhi, on the other hand wore a white and blue patterned saree and glasses hanging around her neck.

Madhuri-Juhi Make A loot On The Anti-Smoking Policy

wo of Hindi cinema’s primary screen queens Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla faced the camera together for the first time on Tuesday when they shot for Soumik Sen’s Gulab Gang in Madh Island.

Interestingly the two heroines who were touted as the closest rivals in the 1990s (with Sridevi leading ahead of both of them) hit it off immediately, partly because the unit had hit upon a golden method of unifying the two screen queens. They had devised a no-smoking club for the shooting where each time someone from the crew was caught smoking he or she had to pay a fine of Rs.500.

Apparently the two ladies had a whale of a time spotting the smokers and collecting the loot.

Said a source, “The crew was initially very apprehensive since Juhi and Madhuri were never the best of friends and quite cold to each other in their heydays. Also, the film has Madhuri in an author-backed role of an activist. Juhi has a relatively smaller role as politician. But the minute they faced the camera for the first shot the crew could sense their mutual comfort. They are no longer the fiercely competitive screen queens they used to be 15 years ago.”

We hear Madhuri and Juhi exchanged a whole lot of mother talk between shots.

Said the source, “It was quite funny because neither Madhuri nor Juhi is known to be particularly sociable on the sets. But together these two reserved ladies opened up with one another and had a blast specially on the no-smoking issue.”

Tannishtha Chatterjee joins Madhuri Dixit’s 'Gulab Gang'

Madhuri Dixit's Gulab Gang is growing. First she was recruited as the leader of the gang of pink-saree-clad crusaders. Now we hear Tannishtha Chatterjee, the award-winning actress from the British film Brick Lane who lately shared screen space with Jude Law and Keira Knightley in Anna Karenina, has joined the gang...literally.

She plays Madhuri's chief lieutenant. Says a source close to the project, "Casting for the film has been problematic from the day Madhuri Dixit was signed to play the main role. They couldn't convince Tabu, Vidya Balan or Raveena Tandon to play the other main female lead of a politician. Finally Juhi Chawla agreed to play the part. Then began the hunt for other prominent members of the Gulab Gang. None of the leading actreses was willing to join Madhuri's gang until the director Soumik Sen who had seen Tannishtha's work in Dev Benegal's Road, Movie and Mangesh Hadawale's Dekh Indian Circus offered her the role of Madhuri's chief lieutenant."

Tannishtha who lately starred in Michelle Yeo's film on child prostitution was seen to be the correct choice for a film on women activists. However, we hear Tannishtha wasn't keen on biting the bait.

Says the source, "She read the script and loved it. It was her first mainstream Hindi offer. But her role was skimpy and sketchy. Tannishtha asked for it to be fleshed out. Apparently she told the director, 'Madhuri is a big star and a fabulous actress. It'd be a pleasure to work with her. But I am no walkover. I should have at least a few scenes to sink my teeth into. Otherwise I am happy doing my international projects and off-mainstream films.' The director re-wrote Tannishtha's part before she accepted it."

We now hear that the very talented Marathi actress Divya Jagdale (last seen as the comely science teacher in Amole Gupte's Stanley Ka Dabba) and Priyanka Bose have joined the cast of Gulab Gang as the third member of Madhuri Dixit's gang.

"The hunt is on for a 12-year old girl to play the forth member of Madhuri's gang. The girl has to be bright, pretty and a brilliant actress who can hold her own with Madhuri, Tannishtha and Divya," says our source.

Madhuri Dixit-Nene & Saroj Khan back together for Gulaab Gang

Town diva Madhuri Dixit-Nene has always created an impression with her dance moves - whether it's her first hit number Ek do teen in Tezaab or Humko aaj kal hai intezaar from Sailaab, or better still, Dhak dhak karne laga from Beta. And a lot of credit of her sensuous moves goes to choreographer Saroj Khan - a mentor to many a Bollywood star including Sridevi. Saroj shared this pic on Facebook of guru and shishya (Madhuri) practicing some moves. Mads and Saroj are coming together after a decade, in the actor's new film Gulaab Gang. Aren't we glad? 'Cos we know Madhuri had missed working with Saroj on dance film Aaja Nachle in 2007. "My name is always synonymous with Sarojji and her dances," she had said. We agree. And we're expecting a lot from the duo! Aren't you?

Madhuri Dixit, Saroj Khan back after a decade for Gulaab Gang

Mumbai, Dec. 27 -- They first worked together back in the late '80s, and in that period, delivered one of Bollywood's most memorable dance numbers - 'Ek do teen' (Tezaab; 1988). Choreographer Saroj Khan and actor Madhuri Dixit delivered hits through the next 10 years or so, with dance numbers such as 'Dhak Dhak' (Beta; 1992).

They last worked together in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas (2002). Ten years since, they are coming together for a number called 'Dheemi dheemi' in producer Anubhav Sinha's next, Gulaab Gang.

They will start shooting the song at Wai, Maharashtra, from January 7. About bringing the actor and choregrapher pair together again, Anubhav says, "Madhuri is going to dance to Sarojji's choreography after a long time. I'm excited to see what the shoot will be like."

Saroj Khan reckons Madhuri has remained as professional as ever, with her dancing ability not having waned in spite of her staying away from the big screen. "Dancing is like cycling or driving a car. Once you know it, you never forget it," Khan says. Madhuri's last film, Aaja Nachle (2007) was based on dance, and recently, she also judged the dance show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, on TV. In an earlier interview, the actor had revealed that she practices Kathak for an hour every day.

Gulaab Gang is inspired by Sampat Pal Devi, a gang leader in Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and revolves around the struggle for women's rights in the region. It will be directed by Soumik Sen. Producer Sinha also clarifies that the film won't have an item number. "Madhuri will be seen fighting injustice against women, so she obviously can't break into a sexy song," he says.

Madhuri Dixit Debuts as Playback Singer ahead of Priyanka Chopra!
Posted on Tuesday, April 09, 2013 (EST)
Madhuri Dixit will notch up many firsts in Soumik Sen's Gulab Gang, which Madhuri headlines with Juhi Chawla. The film is Madhuri's first actioner and in it she also debuts as a playback singer!
April 10, 2013, (Sawfnews.com) - Madhuri Dixit will notch up many firsts in Soumik Sen's Gulab Gang, which Madhuri headlines with Juhi Chawla. The film is Madhuri's first actioner and in it she also debuts as a playback singer!

Madhuri has sung a song for the film with her mother.

The talented actress is not only a dancer, but also a trained singer who never got an opportunity to showcase her crooning talent in films before.

On April 4, Madhuri Tweeted:

Song rehearsal, song, dub, action rehearsal. After a full day yesterday, back on @gulaabgang set w Sarojji Smile loving it.
— Madhuri Dixit-Nene (@MadhuriDixit1) April 4, 2013

The recording was completed at Empire Studios in Andheri, Mumbai.

Soumik was probably referring to Madhuri's crooning in his tweet a day earlier.

One of those days that leaves you with a song on your lip and a lump in your throat. Thankful to team #GG for letting me be part of history.
— soumik sen (@bangdu) April 3, 2013

Producer Anubhav Sinha is ecstatic over Madhuri's debut as a singer in his film.

"It is a little known fact that Madhuri sings beautifully. In fact, her mother always wanted her to be a classical singer. We are extremely happy she has sung first for our film. You will get to hear her soon," Sinha told Mumbai Mirror.

Anubhav says in one of the scenes that appears in the first half of the film, Madhuri is shown breaking into a song but they decided to change it into a full fledged song.

"Madhuri and her mother completed the song in all respects in two hours. Both have done a fabulous job, and we are very impressed," said Sinha.

Madhuri Dixit sings with mother for 'Gulab Gang'

Madhuri Dixit has danced her way into the hearts of millions of fans over the years and now the veteran actress will be donning a new avatar.

Madhuri Dixit, who is all set to make her comeback with Gulab Gang, will be flexing her vocal chords with her mother Snehlata Dixit.

Apparently, the decision to have Madhuri sing happened when the makers of the film noticed a particular sequence that needed the actress (played by Madhuri) to break out into a song in the first half.

It was then that the makers decided on converting the sequence into a full fledged song.

Talking about this, producer Anubhav Sinha says: "We had decided to do the track with Madhuri, and then she came there with her mother. It was in fact Soumik's idea to use both of them for the track, since her mother has a background in singing."

The recording was completed recently at the Empire Studios in Andheri.

With this, Madhuri joins the club of Bollywood celebrities who have also tried a hand at singing - Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, among others.

Madhuri and mom sing together for 'Gulab Gang'
Madhuri Dixit's mother Snehlata, who is a classical singer herself, crooned alongside her daughter for her upcoming film

April 15, 2013

It was almost a family affair at the sound studios while one of the music tracks of Soumik Sen’s upcoming film was being recorded. Madhuri Dixit, who recently lent her voice for a song from her film, also had her mother and father attending the session along with her. And sources say it is not just Mads but her mother too who has sung for this particular track in the film.

Madhuri with her mother Snehlata
Madhuri with her mother Snehlata

Sources say Madhuri’s mother Snehlata is a trained classical singer and her parents wanted the actress to become a crooner one day. But fate had something else in store for Madhuri. And despite being unwell on the day, Madhuri’s father too came to watch mother and daughter sing together.

Producer Anubhav Sinha says requesting Mad’s mom to sing was a last-minute decision on the part of the makers. He says, “The recording was going on in a studio in Andheri. The decision to ask auntyji to sing was an impromptu one. When we got to know that she is a classical singer, we wooed her to sing and she obliged.”

Incidentally, Sinha worked with Madhuri as an assistant back in 1993. And the producer has known Snehlata since 20 years now. He adds, “We had a blast while recording the song. It was so much fun to see both of them sing.”

Madhuri and her mother completed their recording in two hours that took place at the Empire Studios in Andheri.

Anubhav hails Madhuri, Juhi for professionalism

Mumbai, May 1 (IANS) “Gulaab Gang” will see Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla, once rivals, sharing the screen space for the first time. Producer Anubhav Sinha says during initial casting, they never thought about bringing the two together.

Starting her career in 1984 with “Abodh”, Madhuri is two years senior to Juhi, who made her debut with 1986 movie “Sultanat”.

“It’s very fortunate to work with Madhuri and Juhi. Initially, the casting was not done keeping in mind that we have to bring these two actresses together on-screen. In fact, both of them suited for both the characters in the film,” Sinha said at the film’s wrap-up party Tuesday.

The film is being directed by Soumik Sen and is inspired by Uttar Pradesh-based Sampat Pal’s Gulabi Gang that works for women’s rights in the region.

“Soumik and we all liked them a lot and then it was decided to do the film with them. We approached them, they liked it and that’s how the film was made,” said Sinha.

He praised the professionalism of the two actresses, who were competitors back in the late 1980s and 1990s.

“The shooting of the film actually has finished three days before it was scheduled. It had gone very smoothly and both the ladies have been extremely gracious, nice and patient. They are wonderful actresses and stars,” said Sinha, whose last directorial venture was Shah Rukh Khan starrer “Ra.One”.

While Madhuri is playing the lead, Juhi will be seen portraying the antagonist in the film which is loosely inspired by Uttar Pradesh-based social activist Sampat Pal and her Gulabi Gang, which works towards liberation of women in the state.

Madhuri Dixit one of my best co-stars, says Juhi Chawla

Mumbai: Actress Juhi Chawla, who is sharing the screen space with her once arch rival Madhuri Dixit for the first time in ‘Gulaab Gang’, calls the "dhak dhak" girl her "one of the best co-stars" so far.

Loosely based on Uttar-Pradesh based Sampat Pal`s ‘Gulabi Gang’, which works for the women`s betterment, ‘Gulaab Gang’ features Madhuri in the main lead, and Juhi in a negative role.

"I enjoyed working in `Gulaab Gang` because I was working with Madhuri in the film. First time we shot the scenes with each other," Juhi said here Tuesday at the wrap-up party of the film.

"I think she (Madhuri Dixit) has been one of my best co-stars," Juhi added.

Juhi made her acting debut in 1986 with ‘Sultanat’, while Madhuri started acting with 1984 film ‘Abodh’.

But both the actresses had their first commercial hits in 1988 - Juhi made it big with ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’, while Madhuri rocked the nation with her "Ek do teen" number in ‘Tezaab’.

Post that, both gave many hits - If Juhi`s oeuvre boasts of films like ‘Darr’, ‘Yes Boss’, ‘Deewana Mastana’, ‘Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke’, ‘Bol Radha Bol’ and ‘Ishq’, Madhuri gave blockbusters like ‘Dil’, ‘Saajan’, ‘Beta’, ‘Ram Lakhan’, ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ and ‘Devdas’.

Recalling the time of their rivalry, Juhi said: "There was a time when we were arch rivals and that rivalry remained for many years. We used to talk little bit. Whenever we met at any function or on the set of the film....just said `hello` and moved ahead," the 46-year-old said.

But now, putting all the rivalry aside, Juhi is really looking forward to ‘Gulaab Gang’.

"After so many years, we both have got an opportunity to work together in a film. Besides, when I accepted that the script is very strong and she (Madhuri) is the hero and I am the villain in the film, it became very easy to work in the film," Juhi said.
Co-produced by Anubhav Sinha and Abhinay Deo, ‘Gulaab Gang’ has been directed by debutante Soumik Sen.

Crediting Soumik for breaking the ice between her and Madhuri, Juhi said: "Soumik did one of the best things. He called the whole gang (team) of the film and read out the script. Before the shooting of the film, he called me and Madhuri in his office and said, `You people talk about anything, whatever you want to`."

"So, that was an `ice breaker` (between me and Madhuri) before going on the set," Juhi recalled.
